Nerezza - Lady of Pestilence

The Grotesque

March 2020, the world came to a complete standstill. Workers were sent home, schools, pubs, music venues, and any other social establishment closed. We were told to stay at home, or die (or maybe something somewhat less extreme, but you get the point).

Outside quickly became a scary place, and the idea of living a normal life again was somewhat obsolete. We all mostly conformed and took measures to avoid close social interaction. During the few outings we would avoid being near anyone else, often crossing roads to stay away from the chance of infection. The covid pandemic was a truly lonely and very isolating time.

We were made to feel like any other person was dirty, infected, germ ridden, and we must stay away from them. As someone that thrives on connection, this was hugely upsetting.

However, out of that time I was given lots of opportunity for self-reflection and thought, and I came up with this painting to embody my feelings towards the pandemic and isolation.

Almost 5 years later, I finally feel ready to start talking about some of my feelings surrounding that time, this painting, and where I am with my illustration at present.

For now, here is my artwork for Nerezza – Lady of Pestilence
